Fix: “Xero Was Unable to Create Your Batch Payment” Error

An accounting firm contacted us because one of their directors could not create batch payments in Xero. The process worked fine on other workstations but kept failing on his machine. Xero support had suggested checking JavaScript settings, but everything appeared to be configured correctly. We cleared the Chrome browser cache and the issue was resolved immediately. Here is what caused it.

Symptoms

When attempting to create a batch payment in Xero, users see the following error message:

Xero was unable to create your batch payment. You may need to log out and back into Xero.

Common characteristics of this issue:

  • The error only occurs on one workstation, not others
  • Logging out and back into Xero does not fix it
  • Other Xero functions (invoicing, bank reconciliation) may still work
  • The same user can create batch payments successfully from a different computer

Xero support may suggest the issue is related to JavaScript being blocked or your computer time being incorrect:

Affected Software

  • Application: Xero (web application)
  • Browser: Google Chrome (most common), also affects Microsoft Edge and other Chromium browsers
  • Platform: Windows, macOS

Cause

This error is typically caused by corrupted or stale browser cache data that interferes with Xero’s JavaScript-heavy batch payment process. Xero’s batch payment feature relies on client-side JavaScript to build and validate the payment file before submitting it to the server. When the cached JavaScript files are outdated or corrupted, the process fails silently and Xero displays the generic “unable to create your batch payment” error.

This explains why the issue is workstation-specific. The same Xero account works fine on a different computer because that machine has a fresh browser cache.

Resolution

Step 1: Clear Chrome browser cache

  1. Open Google Chrome
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + Delete (Mac) to open the Clear Browsing Data dialog
  3. Set the Time range to All time
  4. Ensure Cached images and files is checked (you can uncheck Browsing history and Cookies if you prefer to keep those)
  5. Click Clear data
  6. Close and reopen Chrome
  7. Log back into Xero and try creating the batch payment again

Step 2: If clearing cache does not fix it

If the issue persists after clearing the cache, try these additional steps:

  1. Check your computer time: Xero requires your system clock to be accurate. Open Settings > Time & Language > Date & time and ensure Set time automatically is turned on.
  2. Disable browser extensions: Ad blockers, privacy extensions, and security add-ons can interfere with Xero. Try opening Xero in an Incognito/InPrivate window (Ctrl + Shift + N) which disables extensions by default.
  3. Try a different browser: If the issue is Chrome-specific, try Microsoft Edge or Firefox to isolate whether the problem is browser-related.
  4. Check for Chrome updates: Open chrome://settings/help to ensure Chrome is up to date. Outdated browsers can cause JavaScript compatibility issues.
  5. Reset Chrome settings: As a last resort, go to chrome://settings/reset and click Restore settings to their original defaults. This resets startup pages, new tab page, search engine, and pinned tabs, disables extensions, and clears temporary data.

Important Notes

  • This error can also appear when creating batch invoices or batch credit notes in Xero, not just batch payments. The same cache-clearing fix applies.
  • If the issue affects all users across all workstations, it is more likely a Xero service issue. Check the Xero Status Page for any ongoing incidents.
  • Clearing cookies will log you out of all websites. If you only want to clear the cache for Xero specifically, you can go to chrome://settings/content/all, search for “xero.com”, and clear site data for just that domain.
  • Managed browser policies (such as those deployed via Microsoft Intune or Group Policy) can sometimes block JavaScript on specific sites. If your IT provider manages your browser settings, ask them to verify that xero.com is not restricted.
