A solicitor working remotely at a law firm reported they could not open Practice Evolve, their legal practice management system. Their Cloudflare WARP VPN was connected (orange icon showing active) and mapped network drives were accessible, but Practice Evolve kept failing with a “Server not found” error. Another staff member had experienced the same issue the previous week. After extensive troubleshooting, including reinstalling both Cloudflare WARP and Practice Evolve, the root cause turned out to be a missing policy rule in Cloudflare Zero Trust that was not allowing traffic to the Practice Evolve SQL server.
Symptoms
When opening Practice Evolve remotely over a Cloudflare WARP (Zero Trust) VPN connection, the application displays the following error at the login screen:
Server not found. Please confirm the server address. If the problem persists, please contact your system administrator
Key characteristics of this issue:
- Cloudflare WARP shows as connected (orange icon in the system tray)
- Mapped network drives and other network resources work normally
- Only Practice Evolve fails to connect
- The issue affects multiple users, not just one person
- Reinstalling Practice Evolve or Cloudflare WARP does not fix it
Users may also see the following Cloudflare WARP notification:
We are unable to communicate with the Cloudflare WARP service. Please reinstall or contact your administrator for assistance.
Affected Software
- Practice Evolve - Legal practice management software (any version that connects to a SQL server)
- Cloudflare WARP / Zero Trust - VPN and network access client
Cause
The Cloudflare Zero Trust / WARP tunnel policy was not configured to allow traffic to the Practice Evolve SQL server. While the WARP tunnel was working correctly for general network access (mapped drives, file shares), the specific IP address or network range used by the Practice Evolve SQL server was not included in the Cloudflare tunnel or gateway policy.
This means the Practice Evolve client application could not reach its database server, resulting in the “Server not found” error. Because this is a policy-level issue, it affects all remote users connecting through Cloudflare WARP, which explains why multiple staff members experienced the same problem.
Resolution
For IT Administrators: Add a Cloudflare Policy Rule
- Log in to the Cloudflare Zero Trust dashboard at https://one.dash.cloudflare.com
- Navigate to Gateway > Network policies (or Settings > WARP Client > Split Tunnels, depending on your configuration)
- Add a rule to include/allow traffic to the Practice Evolve server IP address (this is the SQL server that Practice Evolve connects to)
- Save the policy. The change will apply to all users on the next WARP reconnect
- Ask the affected user to disconnect and reconnect Cloudflare WARP, then test Practice Evolve
For End Users: Quick Checks
- Confirm Cloudflare WARP is connected (orange icon in system tray)
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting WARP
- Test if you can access mapped network drives. If drives work but Practice Evolve does not, the issue is likely a Cloudflare policy that needs updating
- Contact your IT team, as this requires an admin-level change in Cloudflare Zero Trust
Important Notes
- This is a one-time admin change. Once the policy is updated, it applies to all users on the Cloudflare tenant.
- Reinstalling Cloudflare WARP or Practice Evolve will not fix this issue, as the problem is in the Cloudflare Zero Trust policy configuration.
- If your organisation adds new servers or changes IP addresses for Practice Evolve, the Cloudflare policy may need updating again.
- This same type of issue can occur with any application that connects to a specific server, not just Practice Evolve. If an app works on-site but fails over WARP, check the Cloudflare tunnel and gateway policies first.
