A finance team member at a small business contacted us because they could no longer export reports from MYOB AccountRight to Excel. Clicking the export option either did nothing or produced an error. The issue started after some files were moved during earlier troubleshooting on the machine. We found that the Excel export template files (XLT files) had been displaced during a profile migration, and copying them back to the correct location fixed the problem immediately.
Symptoms
- Clicking “Send To” > “Excel” in MYOB AccountRight does nothing, or the export silently fails
- Reports that previously exported to Excel no longer open a spreadsheet
- An error may appear when attempting to export, or Excel opens with a blank/broken file
- The issue affects all reports, not just a specific one
Affected Software
- MYOB AccountRight (all versions including 2023.x and 2024.x)
- Microsoft Excel (any version)
- Windows 10 and Windows 11
Cause
MYOB AccountRight uses XLT (Excel template) files to format reports when exporting to Excel. These template files are stored in:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\MYOB\AccountRight\[version]\Reports\Spreadsheet
If these template files are missing, MYOB cannot generate the Excel export and the process fails silently or produces an error.
Common reasons the templates go missing:
- Profile or data migration – files were moved or left behind as placeholders (for example, during a Dropbox or OneDrive profile migration where synced files were not fully restored)
- MYOB reinstallation or update – a failed or incomplete install may not restore the template files
- Accidental deletion – the files were removed manually or by a cleanup tool
Resolution
Method 1: Restore the Missing Templates
- Navigate to the MYOB reports folder:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\MYOB\AccountRight\[version]\Reports\SpreadsheetReplace
[version]with your installed version number (for example,2024.3). - Check whether the folder contains XLT or XLTX files. If the folder is empty or only contains placeholder/shortcut files, the templates are missing.
- Locate the original XLT files from one of these sources:
- Another computer running the same version of MYOB AccountRight
- A backup of the machine taken before the issue started
- A previous user profile on the same machine (if files were displaced during a migration)
- Copy the XLT files into the
Spreadsheetfolder listed in Step 1. - Close and reopen MYOB AccountRight, then test exporting a report to Excel.
Method 2: Reinstall MYOB AccountRight
If you cannot find the original template files, reinstalling MYOB AccountRight will restore them.
- Download the latest version of MYOB AccountRight from the MYOB support site.
- Close MYOB AccountRight completely.
- Run the installer (MSI). You do not need to uninstall MYOB first, as the installer will repair and restore missing files including the XLT templates.
- Once the installation completes, open MYOB AccountRight and test the Excel export on any report.
Important Notes
- This issue is different from the 64-bit Office compatibility problem that can also prevent MYOB exports. If restoring templates does not fix the issue, check whether you are running 64-bit Microsoft Office. See our related article below for that scenario.
- The template folder path includes the MYOB version number. If you have upgraded MYOB, make sure the templates exist in the folder matching your current version, not an older one.
- If your organisation uses Dropbox, OneDrive, or another sync tool to back up the Public Documents folder, verify that the XLT files are fully synced and not just cloud placeholders. Right-click the files and choose “Always keep on this device” if needed.
- Reinstalling MYOB AccountRight does not affect your company files or data. It only restores program files and templates.
