An accountant at a small firm contacted us because they were trying to install a new MYOB company file but kept getting an error saying there was a problem loading AccountRight. They had downloaded the file from MYOB’s website and followed the standard steps, but the installation kept failing. We fixed it by uninstalling MYOB and reinstalling it with administrator privileges, which allowed the software to install and open the company file without errors.
Symptoms
When trying to install a new MYOB AccountRight company file or load an existing one, the application displays the following error:
Sorry, there was a problem installing AccountRight. Try loading again. If the message reappears, please contact MYOB Support.
The error appears after downloading and attempting to install a company file from MYOB’s website. The installation may fail silently or the file refuses to load despite following the standard setup steps.

Cause
MYOB AccountRight requires administrator privileges on the Windows PC to install new company files, update the software, or modify its configuration. If the logged-in user has a standard (non-admin) Windows account, the installation will fail and the loading error will appear. This is a common issue on business PCs where IT teams restrict user permissions for security purposes.
Resolution
To fix this issue, uninstall MYOB AccountRight and reinstall it using administrator privileges:
- Close MYOB AccountRight completely. Make sure the application is not running in the background by checking the system tray.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Press
Win + Ito open Windows Settings, then navigate to the Apps section. - Find MYOB AccountRight and uninstall it. Search for “MYOB” in the installed apps list, click the three-dot menu, and select Uninstall.
- Download the latest version from MYOB’s website. Go to the MYOB Support page and download the current AccountRight installer.
- Right-click the installer and select “Run as administrator.” This is the critical step. Do not double-click the installer as normal. Instead, right-click the downloaded file and choose “Run as administrator” from the context menu.
- Follow the installation prompts. Complete the setup wizard as directed by the installer.
- Open MYOB and sign in. Launch AccountRight, sign in with your MYOB credentials, and verify the new company file loads correctly.
Important Notes
- If you do not see the “Run as administrator” option, contact your IT support team to have them run the installer for you.
- This fix applies to both new installations and situations where MYOB has been updated but is no longer loading correctly.
- Your MYOB company files and data are stored separately from the application, so uninstalling and reinstalling the software will not delete your data.
- If the issue persists after reinstalling with admin privileges, check that your Windows user account has write access to the MYOB data folder (usually located in
C:\Users\[username]\Documents\MYOB).
