We have had several customers contact us about the same issue: MYOB AccountRight suddenly stops exporting reports to Excel. They click the export button and nothing happens. No error message, no loading spinner, just nothing. In one case, the customer had already contacted MYOB support who said they were unaware of any issue. After investigating, we found the root cause was a mismatch between the version of Microsoft Office installed and what MYOB requires. Here is what causes it and how to fix it.
Symptoms
When attempting to export a report from MYOB AccountRight to Microsoft Excel:
Clicking “Send To” and selecting “Excel” produces no output. No Excel file opens, no error message appears, and no loading indicator is shown.
- The export button appears to do nothing when clicked.
- There are no errors in Windows Event Viewer related to the export.
- Other MYOB functions (opening company files, running reports on screen) work normally.
- The issue may appear after a Windows update, an Office upgrade, or a fresh MYOB installation.
Affected Software
- Application: MYOB AccountRight (all versions, including 2025.x)
- Platform: Windows 10 / Windows 11 (desktop and RDS/terminal server)
- Related Services: Microsoft Excel (Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019)
Cause
This issue is almost always caused by one of two things:
1. 64-bit Microsoft Office is installed (most common)
MYOB AccountRight requires the 32-bit version of Microsoft Office. If the 64-bit version is installed, the Excel export functionality silently fails. MYOB’s export engine relies on 32-bit COM automation to communicate with Excel, and this does not work with 64-bit Office.
This commonly happens when Office is upgraded or reinstalled, because 64-bit is now the default for Microsoft 365 and Office 2021+ installations. Unless the installer is specifically configured to use 32-bit, it will install 64-bit automatically.
2. Missing XLT template files
MYOB uses Excel template files (.xlt) to format exported reports. These templates are installed alongside MYOB AccountRight but can go missing if:
- MYOB was reinstalled without using the MSI installer.
- The templates were not copied to the correct directory during a server migration.
- A Windows update or profile reset removed the files.
Resolution
Step 1: Check your Office architecture (32-bit vs 64-bit)
- Open Microsoft Excel.
- Go to File > Account.
- Click About Excel.
- In the dialog that opens, the first line will show the version number followed by either (32-bit) or (64-bit).
If it says 64-bit, this is the cause. You will need to reinstall Office as 32-bit.
Step 2: Reinstall Microsoft Office as 32-bit
- Close all Office applications.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 Apps (or Microsoft Office) and uninstall it.
- Download the Office installer from portal.office.com.
- On the download page, click Other install options (or View apps & devices).
- Under the installer dropdown, change the version from 64-bit to 32-bit before clicking Install.
- Run the installer and wait for it to complete.
- Open MYOB AccountRight and test exporting a report to Excel.
Note for RDS/Terminal Server environments: All users must be signed out before uninstalling and reinstalling Office. Schedule the change during a maintenance window.
Step 3: Restore missing XLT template files (if 32-bit Office is already installed)
If you already have 32-bit Office and exports still fail, the XLT template files may be missing:
- Check the following directories for
.xltfiles:C:\Users\Public\Documents\MYOB\AccountRight\[version]\Reports\SpreadsheetC:\Users\[username]\Documents\MYOB\AccountRight\[version]\Reports\Spreadsheet
- If the directories are empty or missing, reinstall MYOB AccountRight using the MSI installer (not the web installer). The MSI installer correctly deploys the XLT files.
- After reinstallation, verify the XLT files are present in the directories above.
- Test exporting a report to Excel.
Step 4: Reinstall MYOB AccountRight via MSI (if templates are still missing)
- Download the latest MYOB AccountRight MSI installer from the MYOB website.
- Run the MSI installer (this will upgrade in place without losing data).
- After installation, check the Spreadsheet directory for XLT files.
- Restart MYOB and test the export.
Verify the Fix
- Open MYOB AccountRight and open any company file.
- Run any report (e.g., Profit & Loss).
- Click Send To > Excel.
- Confirm that Excel opens with the exported report data.
Important Notes
- 32-bit Office works fine for most users. Despite the industry trend toward 64-bit, the 32-bit version of Office handles the vast majority of business workloads without issue. The main scenario where 64-bit is required is working with Excel files larger than 2GB or complex Power Pivot models.
- This also affects other accounting software. Other applications that rely on 32-bit COM automation (such as older versions of Xero Tax, HandiSoft, and some payroll systems) may also fail silently with 64-bit Office.
- Check before upgrading Office. If your organisation uses MYOB AccountRight, always install the 32-bit version of Office. This should be noted in your IT documentation and enforced via deployment policies where possible.
- MYOB AccountRight on RDS. When running MYOB on a Remote Desktop Server, ensure the server has 32-bit Office installed. All users on the server share the same Office installation, so this affects everyone.
